Fall VTRN Learning Series: Teachers Supporting Multilingual Learners

Do you work with multilingual learners and their families?

Join us on Zoom for the Fall Learning Series! The Virtual Teacher Researcher Network (VTRN) will host a Fall Learning Series for teachers of multilingual learners on Zoom. Come and hear teacher researchers share their action research with multilingual learners. You will receive valuable resources, tips, and activities for your classroom, school and community. Continuing education credits (CEUs) through Elmhurst University will be provided.

Community Partnerships to Support Multilingual Students and Their Families

October 29th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

This action research focused on how schools can partner with public libraries to support multilingual students and their families in an elementary school. The presenter will share her findings which include (1) services public libraries offer for multilingual families, (2) school and library partnership ideas to enrich English development for multilingual students shared by teachers and librarians, and (3) the benefits and challenges of these partnerships identified by participants.

Welcoming Newcomer Students and Supporting Their Teachers

November 12th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (CST)

This action research project was focused on the work of a bilingual coordinator mentoring a teacher whose goal was to support newcomers in English. The presenter will share her action research findings which include (1) ways to support and coach teachers how to approach learning with newcomer students, and (2) how to develop, modify and scaffold curriculum for newcomer students with limited or interpreted formal education.

Bringing Funds of Knowledge Alive Through Multilingual Families’ Sharing

This action research project was focused on incorporating the lived experience narratives of multilingual families in a second-grade classroom. The presenter will share her action research findings which include (1) ways to design a funds a knowledge unit, and (2) the impact of community building after families have shared their experiences in the classroom.
